Susumwet Tautemka Youth Group started in the year 2010 with 10 members drawn from within the Sususmwet location in Belgut Constituency. The members were each doing their own individual business in poultry when they decided to come together and form a group where they would be able to share ideas and expand their businesses.
According to Ms. Nancy, a member of the group, they were careful when choosing membership. They wanted to have a group of young people who had the same vision of prospering in business. They wanted vibrant people who were focused on development.
Since members were already doing poultry, they decided that they wanted to expand their business in poultry since it was a venture that was familiar and members had experience. To make this a success members sought for a loan. Fortunately they had already heard about the products and services being offered by the Youth Enterprise Development Fund from their local leaders. They approached the Youth Fund through the District Youth Officer who gave them more information on how to access the constituency based loan products. They applied for the loan and were successful to get the C-YES loan of KES. 50,000 in January 2011. With the money, the group bought chicks which they are rearing and selling at different stages of growth to their local community. The group is now supplying to supermarkets and Hotels within the Belgut constituency who are making orders for up to 15 broilers per day. A broiler goes for KES. 400 while a tray of eggs goes for KES. 300. In addition to poultry keeping, the group has also expanded its business to include a green house where they plant tomatoes and sell to the locals. They also buy tea from farmers and sell to factories.
Ms. Nancy would like to encourage other young people to form groups and do business. She reminds young people that sometimes white collar jobs are hard to come by. Therefore use your skills to be able to make a living.
