Youth Enterprise Development Fund

Background

 

Youth unemployment is one of the most daunting economic challenges facing Kenya with over 60% of its population aged between 18 and 35. It is estimated that youth unemployment is running between 65 and 80 per cent, of the total unemployment. Many of the unemployed Youth have no job training other than formal schooling. Hence, unemployment is not just a lack of jobs, but also a lack of job skills due to inadequacy of the training infrastructure as well as the means to acquire skills due to poverty.

INTRODUCTION

The Youth Enterprise Development Fund (YEDF) is a state corporation under the Ministry of Public Service, Youth & Gender Affairs. The Fund was established on 1st February 2007 as one of the strategies to address the challenge of youth unemployment in Kenya. It is one of the flagship projects of Vision 2030, under the social pillar. The Youth Fund is mandated to create employment opportunities for young people through entrepreneurship. This is achieved by providing financial support and business development services to youth owned enterprises. The Fund seeks to turn youth into job creators and not job seekers

Our Mandates

  • Group loans Kshs. 50,000 to 400,000
  • Individual loans Kshs. 25,000 to 200,000
  • Business expansion loans Kshs. 100,000 to 2 million
  • Greenhouse loans Kshs. 357,344 to 430,000
  • Poultry incubator loans Kshs. 198,000
  • LPO financing Kshs. 500,000 to 20 million

How to access Youth Fund services

The Youth Fund has 14 regional offices in ten counties across the country. They have been created in an effort to enhance service delivery and our presence at the grass roots. The youth Fund has two officers in every constituency who help youth form groups, fill application forms and provide them with business counselling. The officers have been provided with motorbikes to enable them reach all parts of their respective constituencies. The officers can be found in district youth offices in every constituency.
